Notes from Minnesota

Hey Freelancer!

Another fast update.

You probably have noticed this issue of Writing Etc. is a little later than usual. I've got a good excuse.

I began a big project for a client recently and it's taking more time than I anticipated. But I'm absolutely thrilled to have landed the project. To say I'm busier than a one-armed paper hanger with the hives is an understatement.

This means a couple of things. First, the Writing Etc. Radio Show is on hold until further notice. I'd rather give it the proper attention than do a half hearted job.

Secondly, this also means that there is ample writing work for anyone willing to hustle their bustle a little bit. More on that in a bit.

Onward and upward!

Beth

Mindset Moment

Hey Freelancer,

All of heaven convened one momentous day to determine which soul would best carry a very special message to the inhabitants of a tiny blue planet.

They needed to find a very unique person... someone truly unusual, especially hardy, someone who would persevere beyond all odds.

This person needed nerves of steel and a backbone that wouldn't bow to the easy path.

After much discussion, they determined the very best person to release this incredibly important message.

And the person they chose?

You guessed it.

Write this week, always aware of how very special you are.

Polish Your Resume

Beth Ann Erickson

You’re a freelancer. You don’t need a current resume. Right?

Wrong.

As a freelancer, a polished, current resume can be an essential tool when you want to land long term or corporate assignments.

So how do you write an effective one-page document that summarizes your life’s experience (this can be a challenge for those of us with considerably long lives...), is concise, easy to read, and effective?

It’s not as hard as you think.

Start by writing a grocery list of your experiences. Don’t edit yourself. Just start writing.

Begin by thinking about your education.

List the schools you attended. Jot down your GPA. Write down the classes you took. Don’t filter yourself here. Write down as many as you can remember. You never know when the class you took in “Animal Husbandry” will come in handy.

Now write down your employment history. List every job you’ve ever held along with the beginning and ending dates. If you don’t remember the exact month/date/year, just use the month/year, or the year. Include any volunteer work.

After you have your education and job history written down, write down any activities you’ve done. Write down the activities you participated in while you were a student. Write down the tasks you performed at each of your jobs. Write EVERYTHING down in a list form. If you held any leadership positions, be sure to include these as well.

Now you’re ready for your Kudos list. This list will contain any awards you’ve received. For example... last summer we celebrated Kandi is Dandi days. Some lucky citizen will receive the “Citizen of the Year Award.” If you’re that lucky soul, be sure to include it on your resume! Maybe you’ve won a prize for something you’ve written. Maybe you were a princess in a local festival. Perhaps you were chosen as a grand marshal for a parade.

Now write down your publishing credits. Maybe you have some magazine or newspaper credits. Have you written anything for television or radio? How about any electronic credits? Write down everything you can think of.

Finally, make a list of your skills. Do you speak French? Are you smoldering hot when it comes to computers? Maybe you’re an awesomely fantastic typist. Perhaps you play the violin. Write down every skill.

By now you should have pages and pages of lists.

But you’re not done yet.

Keep looking at your pages this next week and add to them whenever you think of something new.

Next time I’ll show you how to condense what you’ve written into a resume that gets results.
