Organizing Your Articles
Beth Ann Erickson
An Excerpt from Jumpstart Your Writing Career
http://filbertpublishing.com/jumpstart.htm
Nonfiction articles are easy to organize. It’s just a matter of knowing your topic and choosing the best way to keep the message clear.
Write each of the main points for your article on an index card. I know. It sounds like college busy-work but let me assure you that even the best writers in the world organize their work this way. I do it all the time.
As you look at your main points you can decide the best way to organize them.
You can arrange them chronologically. A chronologically or time ordered article works well if you’re explaining how to do something, how to make something, how something works, or how something happened.
You can arrange your article spatially. Space order works if you’re trying to emphasize the importance of where things are placed. You’d use this order if you’re describing the placement of furniture in a room, the layers of the atmosphere, or how to drive to a particular location.
You can arrange your points by topic. This book is arranged in that way.
The topic is “How to Jumpstart Your Writing Career.” The subtopics are: Getting Started, Make Your Writing Sparkle, Writing for Business, And Then There’s Fiction, Snag Paying Assignments, Never Give Up, Keep Your Journal Fresh, and Resources.
Causal order uses “cause and effect” as its organizational tool. Rat Terriers cause stress. Rat Terriers cause contentment. Rat Terriers cause destruction to houses. (I have a Rat Terrier… I can say these things.)
I’d dare say that most articles are written using the topical organizational technique but causal and spatial organization make some very interesting articles as well.
Today pick a organizational tool and start writing. Brainstorm an article idea – something you know well – and organize it. Next thing you know, you’ll be writing the article for publication.
