Notes from Minnesota
Yup. The changes to Writing Etc. keep coming. You talk, I listen.
I received a number of complaints that you had to click to much to read your issue of Writing Etc. I had to keep
the e-mail short to avoid filters. What to do?
Well, this issue reflects a big change to your subscription: it's shorter, quicker to read, still chocked full
of immediately useful information. Let me know how you like the changes!
So, in the spirit of brevity, here we go!
Enjoy!

~~ Quick 5 Point Query Check List ~~
Before you send out your next query, run it through this Five Point Quick Quick Query Check List:
1.Do I address an actual person in my salutation?
2.Does my first paragraph instantly grab the reader's attention?
3.Does my next paragraph keep my reader interested?
4.Does my next paragraph properly introduce me as a writer and present my skills as a benefit to the reader?
5.Do I include a compelling call to action and make it effortless for the reader to contact me?
Run every query through this check list and you'll instantly tighten up the persuasion in every query you send.

“Advice to Freelance Writers: Insider Secrets to Effective Shoestring Marketing, Managing a Winning Mindset, and
Thriving in Any Economy, Volumes 1 – 3” is my final tribute to the freelancing community. Because I knew I wouldn't
write any more books aimed at writers, I spilled all my secrets, every trick, held nothing back and created a
comprehensive 3 volume set.
Writing Etc subscribers will receive five audio CDs. However, the set is selling like hot cakes and will be
going the way of the dinosaur either next week or when I run out, whichever comes first. If you want this special
set, be sure to order today.

~~ Your Questions Answered ~~
A while ago (OK, quite a while ago) I asked you to send me your most vexing freelance questions.
Well... Writing Etc. is continually evolving and I FINALLY figured out a way to make room for this new column.
Let me know how you like it! I'll also be answering your questions on my blog. So here goes... the first vexing
freelance question:
Question: Where do I find paying customers?
Beth says: This all depends on what you write. I counsel writers to diversify beyond novels and articles and
learn how to craft effective copy.
Mastering just a few persuasion techniques will not only help you write effective ads, but it'll help you sell
your writing.
When you write for businesses, start locally. You'll find little to no competition writing ads, brochures,
websites, you name it. It's amazing how much writing a business needs, and keeping a solid writer on call will
ensure that writing is top notch. While you won't earn sky high fees writing for local businesses, you'll
definitely earn more than the average freelance writer.

~~ 4 Reasons to Market with Postcards ~~
You're a freelance writer. Why on EARTH would you use post cards to promote your writing?
1.Your potential readers are not psychic. If they don't know you exist, if they don't know you've written a book
or if they don't know you can write for their business, they won't contact you.
2.Postcards are inexpensive to mail.
3.You can target the people who are your audience and send your message only to them.
4.Postcards are easy to write! It doesn't take much time, you can flex your creativity muscles as much as you'd
like. Plain and simple, complex and graphics filled... it's up to you. Just make sure your message shines.
Most important? Market on a consistent basis because consistent marketing = consistent assignments.
