~~What to do when you miss a deadline~~
Beth Ann Erickson
Last time we talked about tips to make sure you don't miss a deadline. If you remember I said, “Miss a deadline
with a client and you probably won't get hired again. Miss a self imposed deadline and your project could languish.
Implement these tips and you'll ensure that your deadlines will all get met. You might even find your writing
assignments going smoother as well.”
Sadly, even the most organized freelancer may one day find themselves in the horrific situation of missing a
deadline. What do you do then?
Here are a few tips:
1.If the deadline hasn't passed yet, and you have a pretty good hunch you won't finish the assignment in time,
immediately contact your editor and request an extension.
2.If the deadline has passed, immediately contact your editor and assess the damage. Be honest and try to
salvage the situation.
3
3.Make amends. Offer to write a sidebar for free. Offer to reduce your fee for this project. Find a way to make
both of you comfortable working together.
4.Breathe and realize everyone makes mistakes. Don't beat yourself up, that'll only make finishing the project
even more difficult.
5.Over deliver on the final product. Make sure it's ultra-polished and very professional.
Understand life sometimes interrupts the best laid plans. Learn from your mistakes and deal with the snafus in a
professional manner. Then remember to move on to the next project with one eye on the deadline.

~~~Book Review~~~
Write and Sell Simple Information for Fun and Profit: How to Make Money Writing and Publishing Books, E-Books,
Articles, Special Reports, Audio Programs, DVDs, and Other How-To Content by Robert W. Bly
Bly's new book meticulously details how to write and sell... well... simple information products, just like his
title proclaims. But does he deliver?
Heck yeah.
After reading page 23, I instantly knew that Bob was spilling all the beans on this topic because I'd just
watched a “guru” “mentor” his students through this same information for around 100 bucks per month. This book will
set you back a little over 10.
As always, Bob delivers top notch information in an succinct, easy to read manual.
My highest recommendation. Click the link to get it. (P.S. This is an affiliate link and Filbert Publishing will
make a small commission if you decide this book is for you.)
~~7 reasons you need a website~~
I'm always amazed when a writer tells me they don't own their own website. As far as I'm concerned, a website is
one of the most important investments you can make. Here's why:
1.A website will house your clips.
2.You can keep a nice press kit online so the media can easily get first hand information about you.
3.You can showcase your work.
4.You can keep in touch with your readers.
5.You can send people to your website via your byline.
6.A clean, professional looking website will build your credibility.
7.A website will make applying for online writing gigs easier.
If you don't have a website, I'd start planning one pronto. Find a host within your budget, make sure the site
reflects your personality and (most of all) have fun!
~~~~~
You can use any of these articles free of charge on your own website or zine. Just don’t make any changes and be
sure to include this byline.
